Gish&#039; presence and the Griffith look is not casual: Laughton, as a young man, had been impressed by &quot;broken Blossoms&quot;, and watched again a good deal of Griffith&#039;s films before starting to shoot... He wanted to achieve some of the quality this films had.

Had Laughton been allowed, his plans included directing Norman Mayler&#039;s &quot;The Naken And The Dead&quot; and a film based in one of Thomas Wolfe&#039;s novels.

Incidentally, if you visit my blog, besides &quot;night of the Hunter&quot;-related posts, you&#039;ll find a campaign to ask for a proper DVD release of the film.</description>
