Gish' presence and the Griffith look is not casual: Laughton, as a young man, had been impressed by "broken Blossoms", and watched again a good deal of Griffith's films before starting to shoot... He wanted to achieve some of the quality this films had. Had Laughton been allowed, his plans included directing Norman Mayler's "The Naken And The Dead" and a film based in one of Thomas Wolfe's novels. Incidentally, if you visit my blog, besides "night of the Hunter"-related posts, you'll find a campaign to ask for a proper DVD release of the film.
