This is the Loew’s State 1 and 2 on Broadway. I took this picture in 1976.
The original Loew’s State opened in 1921. In 1958 it was closed and modernized reopening in 1959. The first attraction for the newly refurbished theater was Billy Wilder’s “Some Like it Hot.” The theater was split into two theaters ten years later reopening as the Loew’s State 1 and 2 in December of 1968. The doors closed for good in February of 1987.
The Loew’s State held the World Premiere of such big films as “Ben-Hur” which ran for 74 weeks! Also, having World Premiere’s at the Loew’s State were “King of Kings,” “Mutiny on the Bounty” and “The Godfather.”
Films I have seen at the Loew’s State include: Straw Dogs, Skin Game,Farewell, My Lovely, The Way We Were, The Godfather 1 & 2, Dirty Harry, The Valachi Papers, Body Heat, Mommie Dearest, American Hot Wax, Prime Cut, Grease, Heaven Can Wait, Leadbelly,Play Misty For Me, Rocky, Two Mules For Sister Sara, Up in Smoke, Kramer vs. Kramer, The Frenh COnnection, Dirty Harry.
