The Outsider (1961) Mann

Here is a link to my latest article at  Halo-17, a little know film called The Outsider. It is the story of Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian, who was one of five Marines and one Sailor who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima.

Very interesting article – I’d heard the song ‘The Ballad of Ira Hayes’ in the Johnny Cash version, but must confess I didn’t know the story of the real Ira at all. I’ve mainly seen Tony Curtis in comedies so would be interested to see him in a dramatic role, though it is a pity they didn’t cast a Native American. Yet another movie I need to see!

Curtis has received very little credit for his dramatic performances, yet he has done some really good work especially in “Sweet Smell of Success”‘ The Defiant Ones” and “The Boston Strangler.” In his recent memoir “American Prince”, his talks about his frustration over the little recognition he has received for his more serious work over the years.
