Here is a major reason I miss living in NYC – The Film Forum. Starting this friday, the Film Forum is presenting a 44 film series of British Film Noir. From well known classics like The Third Man and “Gaslight” to lessor known ( at least to me) films like Roy Ward Baker’s “The October Man” with John Mills. American influence is to be found in films made by expatriates like Jules Dassin with “Night and the City” and Joseph Losey with “The Criminal.”

oh my gosh. I need to go to New York the day they show October Man. I just have to — it’s probably my all-time favorite British noir. If you haven’t seen it, keep an eye out for it on TCM, John Mills is fantastic! Thanks for the heads up!

Hatter’s Castle – a rarity I saw years ago…
Doubtless there are others you want to check out, but the top one is essential.

Allan – I totally agree about “They Drive By Night.” I had the opportunity to see this on a 3rd or 4th generation VHS tape some years ago. Even in the poor condition it was an excellent film. Truly a rare showing.

Well John, yes indeed, this is one of the reasons why NYC is incomparable. And the Film Forum is one of my regular haunts. Allan’s two urgings will be honored, and although I do (like you and others) own many on DVD, I will find it hard not to see my favorite noir film of all-time, Dassin’s NIGHT AND THE CITY, as well as such vintage items like THE THIRD MAN (one of my favorite films ever in ANY genre), THE SEVENTH VEIL (just bought on Region 2 DVD), IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY, THE SMALL BACK ROOM, GASLIGHT, OBSESSION, THE FALLEN IDOL, THE CRIMINAL, SEVEN DAYS TO NOON, BRIGHTON ROCK, and VICTIM.
John, I will be there with bells on. I only wish you could somehow get up there to make an appearance so we could meet up, but that’s easier said than done. I will be sure to take some pictures and write a few reviews too.

Sam – The opportunity to see classics like “Night and the City” and The Third Man” are a real treat, though the rarer gems and the chance of discovery a new personal favorite is always exciting.
It would be a pleasure to get together if the opportunity arises. Like you say that is easier said than done, but one never knows.
I will be looking forward to the photos and especially any commentary you would do on the films.

Fans of the British film THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT: I want to direct you to a post on David Cairns’ blog SHADOWPLAY, entitled “Things I Read Off The Screen In THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT”. You’ll get to see a nice array of screen grabs from the film, plus David’s running commentary, which is very funny, and very entertaining. I happen to like this film a lot, along with some of the others offered in the series such as THE OCTOBER MAN, IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY and CORRIDOR OF MIRRORS (Christopher Lee’s debut film). It surprises me that Cavalcanti’s THEY MADE ME A FUGITIVE isn’t included in the series, and it disappoints me that TEMPTATION HARBOUR isn’t in the mix, a rarely-seen Brit noir starring Robert Newton, Simone Simon and the oft-mentioned William Hartnell. I would LOVE to see this one.

Hello guys,
My name is John and I am from Stirling. I have not long ago discovered this forum and I like it very much.
I am a bit shy so I wont talk much about me but maybe when I will get confortable, you will get to know me better!
My main hobbies are playing chess and watching movies. I also love outdoor activites but the temperature has been bad for the last days or so here in Stirling.
